At the 2010 census, Fair Play had a population of 687. The crown jewel of Fair Play is Lake Hartwell, a large reservoir situated on the South Carolina-Georgia line. Fair Play is close to I-85, providing convenient access to nearby larger cities, such as Greenville and Athens, Georgia, which are approximately 45 and 50 miles away, respectively. Residents may travel to these cities (and others, such as Spartanburg, Charlotte, or Atlanta) for dining, shopping, and other big city amenities. There are a handful of restaurants, shops, grocery stores, and other businesses scattered throughout the region surrounding Fair Play.

History

The census-designated place of Fair Play was established in 1833. According to tradition, it was named Fair Play when a bystander urged two brawling pioneers to “play fair”. The community is located in Oconee County, which was created in 1868 and named for the Cherokee word meaning “water eyes of the hills”. The railroad played a major role in the development of the region, as the Blue Ridge Railroad connected Anderson with Walhalla in 1859.
